Budget

Estimated:

Van rental: $ 400 Per person US $
Hotel: $ 550 ($55 US x 10) per person total US $ for Hotels including Breakfast and Dinner
Misc, Gas,Tolls $ 200
Lunches $ 100 ($10 a day x10 days)

$1250ish per person US Dollars (if exchange rate stays where it is, lets hope it gets better)

Transporation

For 4 dudes, bikes and bike gear plus luggage we need a vw van size vehicle. They are 3 times as much as regular rental car. Right now with insurance and fees it would be a little under $400 per person for the car for 10 days. The upside is our hotels will so inexpensive and they'll include breakfast and dinner at most so that part of the budget will be low.

Itenerary

July 16 -- Depart Evening

July 25 -- Return

The way it looks now is that we can catch two days of the TdF in our first lodging and two days in our second. The rest of the days we can vary our rides. If we roll out by 9-10 am we can be back by 3pm on the non TdF days to catch the race live on TV. On race days we may be gone from 8am to 8pm because we have to navigate road closures and such.

Flights

We should aim for
Avignon arrival with
Grenoble departure.

If you can't get flight into Avignon then just shoot for Grenoble arrival and depart. We can get van at either.

Worst case we land in Grenoble or Marseille, then take off from Grenoble.

AA Flights::: DFW to Marseille MRS (no Avignon flights) depart july 16, return july 25
Dallas to Marseille by 5PM on the 17th at the earliest transferring through London
or
Dallas to Aix en Provence QXB by 5pm

Marseille to Dallas would be at 9:30 am Saturday arriving dfw at 5pm

NOTES IN CASE WE HAVE TO GO TO PARIS FIRST:
Typically arrive at De Gaulle Airport in Paris between 8-10 am and then transfer on.
When looking don't be too alarmed by shorter transfer times either, in France you don't go through customs and re-check your bags like in the states when you arrive international. You do that when you arrive at your final destination in France so for instance if you switch planes in Paris you wouldn't see your bags like you would in the US and have to deal with customs. You get off the plane and probably have to go to another terminal, going through security again but without all of your bags. The customs stuff happens in the city of your final de-plane.

Ultimately, if we can get an itinerary into Avignon France, and out of Grenoble that would be easiest. Avignon may be tricky though at there aren't tons of flights there.

I guess when you guys book maybe I can peek at the itinerary to make sure there are no snafu's, the biggest ones are flying you through wierd hubs or making you land in Paris at De Gaulle and transfer by bus to Orly, the other Paris airport. Also, the less plane changes the better so your luggage risks getting lost less.

Hotels

In between the time I sent the mail last week and now I recieved a mail from a second Gite in the area near alpe d huez. It is a nicer place because they actually operate a full restuarant with a chef. The place is owned by a British couple (the chef is french!) as their name isn't French and their english is perfect. The second reason I know they are brits is they have biere en pression (beer on tap)--a sin for a frenchman. It would be $65 per night dinner breakfast include with private baths, better food, beer, and nicer property. There are a couple of great reaturants in town nearby that I've been to before so if we don't take dinner they'll deduct the cost. Basically $15 more per night than the first place (chalet cote belle) . In reality it would only be 10 more a night because I forget to include sheets and towels in the fee for Chalet cote belle.
